How to Remove EXIF Data from Photos Online
ImageToolbox TeamJune 20, 20264 min read

Every photo you take contains hidden data. Here is how to strip it before sharing.
What is EXIF Data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is metadata embedded in your photos by your camera or phone. It includes:
- GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken
- Camera model and settings (make, lens, aperture, ISO)
- Date and time the photo was taken
- Software used to edit the image
- Thumbnail of the original image
Why You Should Remove EXIF Data
- Privacy: Sharing a photo taken at your home reveals your exact location
- Safety: Posting photos of your children online exposes their routine locations
- Professional: Client photos should never leak shooting details
- Security: Thieves can tell when you are on vacation from vacation photos
How to Strip EXIF Data
Method 1: Convert to a Different Format (Strips EXIF)
The easiest way to remove EXIF data is to convert your photo to a different format. This strips all metadata:
- JPG to PNG — strips EXIF, adds transparency support
- PNG to JPG — strips EXIF, reduces file size
Method 2: Re-compress the Image
Using our Image Compressor strips EXIF data during re-compression while reducing file size.
Method 3: Screenshot Method
Take a screenshot of the photo on your phone — screenshots never include EXIF data (but quality may be reduced).
What Data Do Different Formats Keep?
| Format | EXIF | GPS | Thumbnail |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG Original | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PNG (from conversion) | No | No | No |
| JPEG (re-compressed) | No | No | No |
| WebP | No | No | No |
| Screenshot | No | No | No |
Protect your privacy — compress or convert your images with ImageToolbox. All processing happens in your browser, so even the EXIF data never leaves your device.
